How to set up e-mail

These directions are for the most common E-mail clients in Windows 95 and 98. If you are using any other client program or Operating System please contact the Helpdesk for assistance at 1-866-GET-ON-IT.

Incoming Mail Server: pop.mikrotec.com
Outgoing Mail Server: pop.mikrotec.com

Configure Outlook Express:
  • Microsoft Outlook Express version 6.0 for Windows XP
  • Microsoft Outlook Express version 5.5 for Windows ME
  • Microsoft Outlook Express version 5.0 for Windows 98
  • Microsoft Outlook Express versions 4.0 & 5 for Windows 95
  • Microsoft Outlook Express versions 4.0 & 5 for Windows NT 4.0
  • Microsoft Outlook Express version 4.0 for Windows 3.1

  1. In Outlook Express, click Accounts on the Tools menu.
  2. In the Internet Accounts dialog box, click Add, and then click Mail.
  3. In the Display Name box, type the name you want others to see when you send a message, and then click Next.
  4. In the E-mail Address box, type the e-mail address for the account you are using (for example, janedoe@account.com), and then click Next.
  5. Under E-mail Server Names, select the appropriate incoming mail server type (POP3 is the default type), and then type the names of your incoming and outgoing mail servers. Click Next. NOTE: This information is provided by your Internet service provider (ISP). If you do not know this information, contact your ISP.
  6. Depending on your login type, either type your POP account name and password in the POP Account Name and Password boxes, or click Log on using Secure Password Authentication (SAP). Click Next. NOTE: Contact your ISP to determine which login type you should use.
  7. In the Internet Mail Account Name box, type a name to identify the mail account you are configuring. This is known as the friendly name for the account. Click Next.
  8. Click the connection type that you use to connect to the Internet, and then click Next. NOTE: This step does not apply to Outlook Express 5. If you click Use my phone line to connect, you are prompted to either create a new Dial-Up Networking connection or use an existing one. If Dial-Up Networking has been configured for your ISP, click Use an existing dial-up connection, click the name for your Dial-Up Networking connection in the list, and then click Next. If you click Connect using my local area network (LAN) or I will establish my Internet connection manually, you are not prompted for any additional settings.
  9. Click Finish.
Configure Microsoft Outlook:
  1. Open Microsoft Outlook.
  2. Go to Tools, Services
  3. Press Add, choose Internet Mail if this is not listed on the list
  4. Double click Internet Mail.
  5. On the General tab, for E-mail address, type your user name@aebc.com
  6. Type in Internet Mail server pop.mikrotec.com, your account name (login name) and password.
  7. Press advance option button and type ‘pop.mikrotec.com’ for outbound mail.
  8. Click on the connection tab
  9. Choose connect using the modem.
  10. Press drop down menu to choose dial up connection (this should be already configured, otherwise press add or edit entry and follow instruction on screen).
  11. Click OK.
Configure Internet Mail:
  1. Open Internet Explorer
  2. On the tool bar click the mail icon
  3. On the options tab go to read mail
  4. Click the mail icon then the options tab
  5. Now click on the server tab on the top of the menu
  6. Type in your name in the name field, e-mail address in the e-mail field
  7. Type in pop.mikrotec.com in both the incoming and out going mail server fields
  8. Type in the username you selected in the account name field and your password in the password field (NOTE: your password will appear as asterisks for security purposes)
  9. Click the apply button at the bottom of the window then click on the OK button
Communicator 6.x Mail:
  1. Open Netscape Mail
  2. Click Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings
  3. Click New Account
  4. Make sure ISP or email provider is selected & click next
  5. In the Your Name field, type in your name
  6. In the Email Address field, type in your email address & click next
  7. Make sure that there is a dot in POP
  8. In the Server Name field, type pop.mikrotec.com (both fields are the same) & then click next
  9. The next field should already have your username, so click next
  10. The next screen should be OK, so click next
  11. Now click finish to complete the account setup and your ready to send and recieve email
  12. Click OK to return to the main Netscape Mail screen
To test, try sending a message to yourself and checking your mail.

Communicator 4.0 - 4.08:
  1. In Communicator, from the Edit menu, select Preferences.
  2. Under Mail & Groups on the left, select Identity. If you do not see Identity, click the plus sign (+) or triangle (for Mac users) to display more categories; select Identity.
  3. Enter a name in the Your name text box.
  4. Enter your email address in the Email address text box.
  5. Under Mail & Groups on the left, click Mail Server.
  6. On the right, fill in the first three text boxes:
    • Mail server user name:
    • Outgoing mail (SMTP) server:
    • Incoming mail server:
  7. Click OK to save your changes.
To test, try sending a message to yourself and checking your mail.

Communicator 4.5x-4.6x:
  1. In Communicator, from the Edit menu, select Preferences.
  2. Under Mail & Newsgroups on the left, select Identity. If you do not see Identity, click the plus sign (+) or triangle (for Mac users) to display more categories; select Identity.
  3. Enter a name in the Your name text box.
  4. Enter your email address in the Email address text box.
  5. Under Mail & Newsgroups on the left, click Mail Servers.
  6. On the right, enter your Outgoing mail server in the Outgoing mail (SMTP) server text box.
  7. If your server is not listed under Incoming Mail Servers, click the Add... button and fill out the text fields appropriately.
  8. If your incoming mail server is listed, you can click on it to select it and then click the Edit... button to change its settings.
  9. Click OK in all preferences windows to save your changes.
To test, try sending a message to yourself and checking your mail.
